Viking Power

Hammer of the Gods - Ship of fools

INTRODUCTION |

A motley crew assembled from the flotsam and jetsam of the 1980s London rock scene will be rowing a traditional Viking longboat from Calais to Dover this summer to raise funds for the charity Task Brasil Trust. Featuring members of such rock luminaries as Weapon, Praying Mantis, Jagged Edge and Decimator the crew was put together three years ago to compete in the annual Great River Race along 22 miles of the Thames from Richmond to Greenwich.

The charity, which numbers amongst its supporters bone fide rock gods Jimmy Page, Brian May and Iron Maiden, aims to improve and enrich the lives of the street kids of Brazil with its projects in Rio de Janeiro. More information on the works of the charity can be seen at taskbrazil.org.uk

The crew has evolved and expanded since 2002 and has now completed three Great River Races on behalf of Task Brasil. The 2.5 tonne wooden boat ,’Brynhilde’, is owned and operated by Turk Boatyards who are assisting with the operational and logistical planning. Turks specialise in supplying boats to the film industry; most recently building the fleet for Troy, Hornblower and Harry Potter. Although the distance is the same as that covered in the Great River Race, the currents and tides of the Channel effectively double the actual mileage which will necessitate a total of 24 rowers taking a turn at the 12 oars to complete the arduous 45 mile distance.
